Basic “Anatomy” of the Moore Tornado – Hook Echo

With a tornado, warm air is wrapped into the system from the southeast, whereas the cooler air wraps into the system from the northwest. This is what creates the tornado to last for a while. If the storm system were to occlude and cut off the warm air supply, then the system would eventually weaken. The Moore tornado did eventually weaken after around a half hour to forty-five minutes or so. The warm southeasterly flow can be seen with the green reflectivity prodding into the cell from the southeast, and the cool flow can be seen with the red reflectivities wrapping around to produce the overall “hook” shape. This compilation of radar images from the Moore, OK tornado has a textbook hook echo signature, with an associated debris ball that created a path of damage that was 1.3 miles in diameter (at maximum width).

A horrible tragedy occurred during the afternoon of May 20th, 2013. The tragedy relates to the Moore, Oklahoma tornado, which as of this writing, has killed at 37 people. The setup was nearly perfect for a tornado to form; there were huge amounts of instability for the thunderstorms to “pop” over the Midwest, and a decent amount of shear to fuel the development of these mesoscale systems, leaving a system as it seem as never ending. The Moore, Oklahoma tornado just happened to form as a result of all the right conditions at the right time; however in the wrong place. There is a 1 in 100 trillion chance that the same place gets hit with 2 EF4+ tornadoes, and that is exactly what happened in Moore, OK the afternoon on May 20th, 2013. This case study will delve into the parameters which made the harmless thundershower blossom into a EF-5 tornado in under a half-hour, as well as shed light on the tornado and the damage impacts.

Those of us who love to chase tornadoes, who love storms, on days like what we have seen today makes it a very hard to see what the heart of Oklahoma is facing, the devastation of what a powerful tornado can do to rip apart towns and leave many families loosing loved ones and its really tough when it is children that are hanging on to dear life because of its nature to destroy what is in its path... my heart is sadden , but those who lost their life due to the tornadoes destruction are now in the arm of the angels...... God Bless them !!

Basic “Anatomy” of the Moore Tornado – Rotation within the Tornado

With all tornadoes, the amount of rotation strength, is given by a Gibson Ridge 2 Analyst Edition radar algorithm, and is named “NROT”. The stronger the values, the stronger the rotation. Out of a scale of 3.5, the Moore, OK tornado was a 2.4 (at the time it affected the western suburbs of Moore). This is a very strong rotation value, as we note that the majority of the rotation values associated with tornadoes are much lower than the values in the Moore, OK tornado (the distribution of values are skewed left). We can see a 3-Dimensional image below of the rotation values of the tornado and surrounding mesocyclone.
