Today's Weather Outlook
12:15 AM EDT, May 15, 2014

There will be no shortage of mixed weather reviews across the U.S. today. Whether it is flooding downpours and thunderstorms across the East, a record-threatening heat wave over the West Coast or fall-like temperatures invading the northern Plains, the variety of weather conditions is sure to create headlines.

Residents and travelers over the eastern half of the nation will want to have their rain gear handy. A couple of low pressure systems draped along an eastward trickling cold front will serve as the impetus for several areas of enhanced flooding downpours and thunderstorms. While severe weather won`t be the dominant headline, flash flooding may create localized hazards. When in doubt, turn around - don`t drown!....

Despite the lack of sunshine, the mercury will still manage to climb into the 70s and 80s on Thursday along the East Coast. The exception will be across eastern New England, with 50s and 60s the rule.

The other problematic weather spots will be across the Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, and along the Rocky Front Range on Thursday. For the former, a low pressure system will not only promote extensive shower and thunderstorm activity during the afternoon and evening form Arkansas to Minnesota and northern Michigan, but it will leave residents grabbing a jacket when heading outdoors. Across the Rocky Mountain Front Range, a warm front will trigger showers and thunderstorms that could ruin a few outdoor plans in the afternoon and evening.

The even bigger take away will be the autumn-like chill in the air from the Great Lakes to parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley, where highs will range from the 40s and 50s in northern Michigan to the 60s in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Only places like Dallas and Brownsville, Texas, and New Orleans will climb into the 70s and lower 80s on Thursday.

Meanwhile, scorching heat will deliver yet another day of potentially record-bursting temperatures across much of the West Coast. The mercury will climb well into the 80s, 90s and surpass the century mark for much of southern California and the southwestern deserts of Arizona.......
