Today's Weather Outlook

UPDATED 12:15 AM EDT, May 18, 2014

The Pacific Northwest, northern and central Rocky Front Range, and Tennessee Valley to the Carolinas will be the weather trouble spots for the conclusion of the weekend. Meanwhile, bright mid-May sun will keep the Desert Southwest scorching hot today.

A stubborn front will keep a few showers in the picture across eastern and northern Maine today, with a few areas of showers also bubbling from the Upper Midwest into New York State. Thankfully, they won't ruin many outdoor picnics. Highs will remain cool across the Great Lakes and western New York, where 50s will be common, but a few upper 40s could sneak in across northern Michigan; it will warm into the 60s and 70s along the Interstate 95 corridor.

It will also be unsettled from the Tennessee Valley into the Carolinas. A batch of showers and perhaps a few rumbles of thunder will likely send a few barbecues indoors, but it won't stop temperatures from climbing into the 60s, 70s, and even a few lower 80s where the sun will peak out late in the afternoon and evening.

The final weather hiccup will be found from the Pacific Northwest into the northern and central Rockies today. Rain and thunderstorms, even a few turning severe late in the day across southeastern Montana, will make for quite a depressing end to the weekend. The mercury will range from the 50s across much of the Rockies, to the 60s, 70s, and even lower 80s across the Intermountain West.

Meanwhile, the weather over the Plains and Desert Southwest will be anything but controversial today. However, temperatures will be quite a conversation, with the comfortable 70s and 80s blanketing the Plains, to the steamy 90s and triple-digits stretching from southern California into southern Arizona and a piece of western Texas and eastern New Mexico.
